The Tsunami: Seventy Years Ago
Tomorrow is the seventieth anniversary of the tsunami. The two big tsunamis affected different parts of coastal Hilo. There used to be many buildings along the makai side of Kamehameha Avenue. When the 1946 wave hit, most of them were smashed up, but the mauka buildings largely escaped damage.
This is perhaps the most known photo from the tsunami, of people running up Ponahawai Street.
And this is one of many buildings along Kamehameha wrecked by the tsunami.

William McKinley
Pre-order & get a signed bookplate for #HWASpkr @KarlRove's new book! http://t.co/kf2dgHk1Cp pic.twitter.com/p8cPeonr76
— Harry Walker Agency (@hwaspeakers) October 9, 2015The Wikipedia article on William McKinley.
Historians regard McKinley's 1896 victory as a realigning election, in which the political stalemate of the post-Civil War era gave way to the Republican-dominated Fourth Party System, which began with the Progressive Era.
McKinley's name often figures among some in the Hawaiian sovereignty movement, because the United States annexed Hawaii under his administration.

Pierre Omidyar, Again
There's probably something to occasion this teeth-gnashing about Pierre Omidyar. I'd say Richard Smart had a lot more charm and personality.
Basically Omidyar is the Vinod Khosla asshole of Hawaii http://t.co/YubDlOgQg8

1 August 2013
Today is the seventy-fifth anniversary of Bloody Monday (I'm typing this on 1 August at 8:50 p.m. Hawaii time). I have seen nothing commemorating the Hilo Massacre in the local paper or the local press in general.

A Belated Acknowledgment of May Day (a.k.a Lei Day)
May Day is observed the world over in various ways. In Hawaii it's known as Lei Day and was celebrated with pageants. I don't know if schools observe it the same way they did when I went to school, but it was a huge deal, particularly in elementary school (e.g., Keaukaha in the early-to-mid-1980s).
Here's an article on a Lei Day pageant held in Hilo a few years ago.
General busyness and an illness in the family have precluded me from actually observing May Day this year (no lei, no wearing an aloha shirt), but I must acknowledge it, and sometime I plan to look for photos of old May Days, and share them.

Energy and Hawaii
This will be a short essay on oil and renewable power in Hawaii.
Ian Lind: "Energy Costs, Air Fares, and Our Tourism-Dependent Economy."
I'm still working on this, but wanted to add that direct flights between Hilo and Los Angeles have just begun for the first time since 1983. Are we approaching the peak of oil production or have we passed it? I don't know, but air travel will severely contract in the Post-Oil Age.
Update: I found this.

"Once Was Paradise"
This local short film purports to show a post-oil Hawaii. I first heard about it Tuesday night when it was featured on an episode of Hawaii Reel Stories.
